Mauricio Featherman, Ph.D.
Dr. Featherman has been teaching Marketing, Business Intelligence and Analytics, Statistics, MIS and CS design and development courses at the University level since January 1993. Dr. Featherman first earned an Associates Degree in Marketing (State University of New York at Alfred) after which he escaped New York and moved to sunny San Diego. Dr. Featherman next earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management (San Diego State University), a Master of Science Degree in Systems Management (University of Southern California), and a Ph.D. Degree in Communication and Information Sciences (University of Hawaii). Dr. Featherman has also completed advanced corporate training in Tableau dashboards and visualizations, SAS data mining, and Microsoft training in SQL Server SSMS, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, Sharepoint and ASP.NET technologies.
Prior to making his career change to academia, Dr. Featherman’s corporate experience specialized in manufacturing analytics and supply chain management for the defense electronics industry (San Diego). In addition, Dr. Featherman worked in retail management (San Diego), owned and operated a B2B computer consulting company (Guam), and was the HICSS webmaster (Oahu). The common theme to Dr. Featherman’s career has been the design, development, and training on advanced data-based computer systems to automate, measure and improve business performance.
Dr. Featherman has considerable experience designing and teaching courses in the Management Information Systems and Marketing disciplines. Specific topics include; Business Analytics, Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Office Automation Systems, Supply Chain Management Systems, Website Development, Design of Database and Data Warehouse Systems, Business Intelligence, Telecommunications, and Primary and Secondary Research Techniques.
In particular Dr. Featherman’s computer expertise focuses on designing web and data-based TPS/MIS/DB/BI systems using relational, tabular and dimensional data models, Visual Studio.NET, Tableau and SQL Server. He greatly enjoys designing SSIS packages that feed into T-SQL based KPI’s using SQL Server Analysis Services projects then deploying corporate reports, dashboards, cubes and pivot tables to tablet and web-based management systems. Dr. Featherman also teaches data-centered business research, Tableau-based data visualization and problem solving. Dr. Featherman focuses on teaching design and development of different systems, the use of the technology to research and make better data-centric management decisions, and teaching how managers, business analysts and IT specialists redesign and improve business processes.
Dr. Featherman teaches using a hands-on design format on the following topics; business process reengineering, business analytics, supply chain management, information systems design and implementation, relational, tabular, and dimensional modeling, office automation, principals of marketing, and business performance management concepts (focused around CRM, ERP, SCM, and BI concepts). The software that Dr. Featherman currently uses to breathe life and hands-on perspective into these concepts include:
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 (VB.NET, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, SQL Server Data Tools, System.IO) to create interactive web-based transaction and analysis web sites.
- Microsoft SQL Server 2014, 2016 (Database Management Systems, Integration Services, Analytical Services to create and deploy tabular and dimensional models and cubes, and Reporting Services)
- Microsoft Excel (Powerpivot, data mining, pivot tables, data tables) and Microsoft Power BI

Dr. Featherman is the former Academic Director of the Pullman Analytics MBA, and the former Director of the Center for Behavioral Business Research. He currently is focused on research and teaching. Dr. Featherman is the founder of the Coug MIS Student/Alumni Linked In group which helps to make MIS opportunities available within the MIS@WSU network. Dr. Featherman is a WSU International Business Fellow whom has taken WSU students to study abroad 8 times. He has supported the MISe department and undergraduate MIS major by serving as the MASYS student club faculty advisor for the last decade. Through his leadership within the student club and alumni network, the average number of students hired after graduation over the last three years is 44. His happiest days are when he is informed that a former WSU student hired a current WSU student.
Hundreds of Dr. Featherman’s prior students currently hold MIS, IT, Management and Marketing positions at some of the best corporations of America including: Tableau, Apptio, HP, Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon.com, Expedia, IBM, KPMG, Protiviti, Ernst & Young, Weyerhauser, Expeditors International, Davita, Army, Airforce, NAVSEA, FBI, Foster Farms, Palantir, Costco, Neal Analytics, Hilton, Cox Communications, Avista Utilities, Neal Analytics, Slalom Consulting, Starbucks, PNNL, WSU, Liberty Mutual, Fast Enterprises, Superstar Media and numerous smaller consulting companies. Each student was instilled with the confidence, inspiration, technical knowledge and perspective that information systems can transform organizational business processes resulting in increased managerial insight, process efficiency, and organizational effectiveness.
Dr. Featherman also writes and publishes original Information Systems research investigating online consumer decision-making processes within the e-commerce channel. His research has been published in top academic journals including the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, Journal of Services Management, IEEE Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction, Journal of Business Ethics, Database for Advances in Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, and Decision Sciences.
